A protest was held in Marin City on Dec. 11 in response to a district attorney’s decision not to charge Sheriff Deputy Evan Kubota in the shooting of resident Chaka Grayson.
Around 50 or more people surrounded the Marin City sheriffs’ station with signs and chants calling for Kubota to stand down from his position. Members of the community spoke out against the police force in Marin City as a whole.
Marin City Police stopped Grayson, 44, in his car back in July. What started as a routine traffic stop, resulted in a manhunt and Grayson suffering bullet wounds to his arm.
During the protest, a microphone was made available outside of the sheriff’s office for citizens to voice their opinions, concerns, and plans for change. Marin City resident Carol Thomas took to the mic to call for an organization and petition for a police oversight committee. “Even if you don’t know what to fight for, you know there’s a fight,” she said to the crowd, while being watched by officers on the roof above them.
Royce Mclenore, grandmother of Grayson’s only child, said “My grandson could’ve ended up fatherless.”
Chaka Grayson is due for surgery within the month, and has a 15-month-old son named CJ who was present at the protest with his mother, Tenneil Doss.
