Many students find themselves interested in fast-paced sports where catchy songs, cheerleaders’ energy and a joyful environment amplify the anticipation in the audience. In sports like football, basketball and soccer, stadiums are often filled with fans who love the game but also love the electric atmosphere that surrounds them. However, in golf, the environment is much different than the usual scene of blaring music and loud fans, as it is quieter and more focused. So, if golf doesn’t have the typical attraction of other sports, why do high school students feel inclined to play? Taking a look into the community of golf players outlines the reasons that draw people into this atypical sport.
Junior Ethan Ferry has played golf since the age of four. He was first introduced to the game by his dad, who put a club into his hand and taught him the game. Ferry enjoys the game of golf because he can make progress against himself rather than competing against others.
“Golf’s more of a challenge against yourself, [compared to] other sports [where] you play against another team,” Ferry said.
He also appreciates the sport’s peaceful environment and the relaxation it brings him as a busy high school student.
“Golf gives me a sense of peace. I can go out there, hang out with a bunch of friends, mess around and maybe drive a golf cart every once in a while. Just going out there, being in nature, is pretty relaxing,” Ferry said.
Junior Ben Vaughn has had a similar experience to Ferry in his upbringing with golf. Having played golf since he was three years old, Vaughn was inspired by his grandpa. He argues that the allure of the sport is that anyone can play, and they do not have to be particularly physically tailored for it.
“I think [golf] is better for people who can’t do hard physical activities, but really anyone can play golf,” Vaughn said.
He believes golf has an addictive aspect to it and is designed to keep players wanting to come back for more.
“Once you start, it’s hard for you to stop. It’s always fun and a good way to spend your time, [especially] with your friends,” Vaughn said.
Ultimately, golf is popular because it offers players personal growth in a relaxing way compared to other physically demanding sports. Golf is a game that anyone can play, no matter their abilities or age, and offers something new with each swing.
