The girls’ varsity basketball team started off Thanksgiving break strong by securing a win against Sonoma County’s Analy Tigers at home.
It was a big night for freshman Drew Schultz, as the first game of the season marked her varsity debut.
“I was definitely really nervous at first to go [onto the court], but when I was on the court playing with my team it was a lot easier and it was a great team effort,” Schultz said.
Senior captain Maya Saibel contributed to the team’s win, motivating them after a slow start in the first 5 minutes of the game.
“We started the first and third quarter kind of slow, but we just used that as more motivation to come back stronger,” said Saibel.
With it being Schultz’s first game, she set some personal goals that she hoped to accomplish during the game.
“I was definitely focused on playing good defense during the game and I had a few steals so I’m happy with that,” Schultz said.
Many girls on the team expressed that they felt a ‘good energy’ in the gym tonight.
“Our team came out firing. It was a lot of fun,” Saibel said.
Schultz also mentioned how the team benefited from the high levels of energy.
“I think this was a really good first game for us and we definitely had a lot of energy which helped us play well. We started off a little slow, but I think it’s the energy that really helped us play well,” Schultz said.
The Giants ended the first quarter with a 25-6 lead and kept the upper hand until halftime when they led 46-15. The Giants eventually secured the victory, winning 70-29.
“I think we played really well, with great passing, and great looks everywhere. It was a good game,” said Saibel.
Schultz made it clear that the energy was what ultimately led to their victory.
“I think that [through] all of the minor challenges we had, the energy, especially coming from the bench and on the court, helped us get through them all,” Schultz said.
The girls will play in their next game on Tuesday, Nov. 26 against University High School at 5:30 p.m.
