A gloomy day turned bright for the boys’ varsity water polo team after defeating the San Ramon Valley Wolves (SRV) 12-9. The North Coast Section (NCS) division one semifinal game was played with grit and strength from both sides; the unique plays and vital movements contributed greatly to the gripping game. The Giants controlled the ball most of the first quarter with multiple players contributing goals including sophomore Maddox McClellan, senior Ossie Joplin, freshman Storm Jackson, as well as a 5-meter block from junior goalie Owen Malone. The Wolves put one ball into the back of the net to end the quarter with a score of 3-1. After each scoring 5 goals in the second quarter, both teams headed into halftime with a score of 8-6, with the Giants continuing to hold the lead. Scorers of that quarter were senior Sawyer Goldberg with two goals, McClellan, Joplin and Jackson. The Wolves had a quick goal at the beginning of the third quarter, but the senior dream team, Goldberg and Joplin, both got a goal to finish off the third quarter, with the Giants still maintaining a lead. The fourth quarter was an exciting one for fans and teammates. SRV had two goals to finish off the game, one at the beginning of the quarter and one at the end. Redwood did everything but back down in the final quarter with goals from Joplin and Jackson and an incredible 5-meter block by Malone. The Giants’ nonstop movement and dynamic play contributed to their 12-9 win against the mighty SRV Wolves.
McClellan’s high-powered playing contributed greatly to the Giants’ successful game.
“Overall I think I played well, especially in the first half [making two goals],” McClellan said.
The Giants are heading to the NCS finals on Saturday, Nov. 16 against Tamalpais High School and are preparing to win their second division one title in a row after last year’s win.
“We are going to watch the film and create more plays to be as prepared as possible to play to our fullest potential on Saturday,” McClellan said.
