On Thursday, Oct. 24, girls’ varsity water polo beat San Rafael 14-0, closing out the season on a high note for the graduating seniors.
The game was extra special, as it was their senior night. Their teammates helped make the evening so memorable through posters expressing their love for their seniors and their contributions to the team. The coaches shared stories about the seniors and how they had played wonderfully throughout their high school career and their impact out of the water with each of their endearing personalities. Head varsity coach, Brian Monty, touched on how the team was a strong unit.
“We are [a] really good defensive team, and we counter-attack well out of our defense,” Monty said.
Although they are a strong team, Monty believes that they can still improve on their patience in the water.
“At times we rush things and throw the ball away when we need to be more patient and let things develop, [because of] being too excited and being a little inexperienced. We’re a pretty young team,” Monty said.
Captain Annabelle Kilgore, a senior and member of the school’s varsity swim team, said that the team gave a strong effort, with everyone trying their best and supporting each other during the game.
“The team played really well today. Everyone gave it their all. We had a lot of really good shots, and it was the first shutout I’d ever played with this team, so I was really proud of everyone. Everyone helped back on defense, especially in the first quarter [and] the first half. We made some good passes and plays throughout the whole game, and everyone countered well and helped each other out,” said Kilgore.
Kilgore reflected on the end of the season and the team’s progress in these short months.
“We started out as a young team. We had a lot of new players, so we had new chemistry right from the beginning and sunk into it. We became cohesive and got to know each other well in the process,” Kilgore said.
