On Oct. 10, after an intense battle against University High School in San Francisco, the girls’ varsity field hockey team suffered a 1-2 loss. This is the second defeat the Giants have faced against University this season, with the previous game on Sept. 18 also concluding with a score of 1-2.
However, despite this loss, the Giants gave it their all and communicated well throughout the match. Senior Lucy Tonderys discussed how the team’s approach has shifted from their last game against Berkeley High School on Oct. 7, which they tied 2-2.
“After tying [Berkeley], the shift from that game to this game has been amazing,” Tonderys said. “We’ve improved, and that was really good to see. We played better than we played University last time.”
The Giants began their game strong, as junior Mariel Goodhart charged towards a goal in the first quarter with an assist from senior Jane Broderick. However, the University Devils were quick to retaliate, and the first quarter ended with a tied score of 1-1.
Despite incredible efforts from the forwards, who were determined to get the ball back on University’s side, the Devils ultimately prevailed, scoring an additional goal in the second quarter.
Throughout the rest of the game, the Giants got close to scoring multiple times, employing their offensive skills to keep the ball in their court. However, the game remained at 1-2 throughout the third and fourth quarters, with Goalie Eva Layton holding off the opposition from scoring any further. Senior Jane Broderick spoke about how the team has evolved this season and described communication as a particular improvement.
“You can see that from our Berkeley game to this game, we’ve learned to work together better as a unit, instead of working all the way up the field on our own and losing the ball,” Broderick said. “I think there’s been a massive change in our gameplay.”
After seeing progress throughout these recent games, Tonderys looks to the future for the team.
“I hope that in our next game, tomorrow against Marin Catholic, we’re able to play even better and watch those passes become goals,” Tonderys said.
