On Oct. 7th, girls’ water polo dominated San Marin, closing the game with a 17-7 victory. The Giants opened the game with explosive energy, scoring six unanswered goals in the first quarter. The Mustangs were able to sneak a goal in during the second quarter, but Redwood scored two of their own, giving them an 8-1 lead at halftime. The third quarter was eerily similar to the first, as the Giants scored seven unanswered goals, bringing their lead to 15-1. During the fourth quarter, San Marin scored six goals of their own, getting their last one in just as the clock ran out, but the Giants’ lead was far too big.
Redwood’s success can be attributed to their constant capitalization on their counter-attacks as they tried to convert a goal each time. The team focused on movement and setting picks for each other to create space for their teammates to shoot. Senior Jordan Maurus had an outstanding game, scoring two goals for the Giants and keeping the ball out of San Marin’s offensive side. She commented on areas for the team to improve upon before their next game.
“[Going into our next game], we need to work on being more vigilant and being smarter with our passes,” Maurus said.
The Giants play their next game against Archie Williams High School, the number-one seed in the Marin County Athletic League, on Oct. 10.
