On Sept. 17, boys’ varsity water polo battled against Marin Academy, securing their sixth win and continuing their undefeated season. Throughout the entirety of the game, the Giants maintained control of the lead, ultimately leading them to a 20-7 victory over the Wildcats.
Junior Hudson Quirk was a big contributor to the win and believes Redwood has been carrying strong momentum.
“We are carrying a lot of momentum from these past six games. We have won a lot of them and I think we are going to win more,” Quirk said.
Coach Rudy Kardos was pleased by his team’s overall performance, but a few players stood out.
“Particularly in this game, our [junior] goalie Owen Malone did very well. Our [senior] captains Sawyer Goldberg and Ossie Joplin definitely carried the team. We [also] had some of the young kids do very well like [sophomore] Maddox McClellan and [freshman] Storm Jackson,” Kardos said.
Malone was stellar in the net, coming out of goal to steal passes, and deflecting multiple shots from scoring. As the Giants took a big lead, they rotated many members of their bench in the game. Senior Colin Judson was strong on defense, with multiple steals to stop Wildcat attacks, and junior Jasper Roblee scored a goal for the potent Redwood offense.
Junior Charlie Poser has been a strong force for the Giants, as he’s the fourth leading scorer on the season. He applauded the team’s performance in the win but pointed out an area for improvement.
“We played great, we could have made some better passes but overall we won the game, that’s what matters,” Poser said.
Poser is hopeful about the remainder of the season, and hopes they can win two championships as they did last year.
“We are hoping to win MCALs (Marin County Athletic League) and go into NCS (North Coast Section) confidently and hopefully win that too,” Poser said.
As defending champs, the Giants is motivated to keep the title in their possession.
“We are the defending champions, [in] MCAL and NCS, so we have the title to defend but it won’t be easy,” Kardos said.
The Giants play next on Sept. 24, at home against Novato High School. The match takes place at 6:00 p.m.
