On Saturday, Sept. 14, varsity football faced off against the Maria Carillo Pumas, securing their second win of the year. Powered by a strong offensive performance, Redwood beat the Pumas 32-16, marking the most points they’ve scored this season.
On their home field, the Giants found the endzone twice in the first quarter and kept their early lead for the remainder of the game. Maria Carillo fought back in the second quarter with a score of their own, challenging the Giants’ early lead. However, Redwood’s offense put the game away in the second half behind a powerful performance by the offensive line.
The Giants had multiple players that stood out and contributed to their victory. Senior quarterback Kody Vasquez led the offensive, completing 18 of 27 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns. Seniors Ronan Ralston and Ashlin Quach were each on the receiving end of a touchdown. On the ground, senior running back Sean Cunneen added 154 yards and punched in two touchdowns. The defensive line was also stellar; senior Erik Johnson had three sacks, and juniors Cooper Canon and Ben Vaughn each had one.
The Giants’ next game is Saturday, Oct. 1, against the Enterprise Hornets at Enterprise High School. This match will open up league play in the new Redwood Empire League.
