On Friday, Aug. 30th, the girls’ varsity field hockey team secured their second win of the season with a relentless 5-1 performance against Pleasant Valley. Coming off the momentum of their first triumph the previous day, the team showed incredible resilience despite the intense heat. They played with uninterrupted energy from the opening whistle, and the back-to-back victory set a promising tone for the season.
Key moments in the game came from juniors Lucy Jeffers and Nina Baker. Jeffers had a significant impact, scoring a crucial goal that shifted the game in Redwood’s favor. Baker followed by finishing a pivotal penalty shot. Stepping up with confidence and delivering a powerful stroke, her shot dodged the outstretched reach of the goalie, solidifying the Giants’ lead.
In addition, Senior Jane Broderick protected the ball well throughout the entire game and dribbled it down the field, leading to many attacks. To secure the Redwood victory, senior Maya Saibel fired in a goal, giving the Giants a 5-1 lead.
Junior Caitlin Titcombe credits the win to improved passing and performance on their corners — a play that takes place after a penalty in the circle.
“We definitely stepped up on our passing, and we shined on our corners,” Titcombe said.
Senior Francesca Mitchell adds that the team is so connected because of the time they spend together during practice, connecting as both teammates and friends.
The girls’ varsity field hockey team has won the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) in each of the last five seasons, a legacy that carries immense pressure to keep the streak alive. Although the team performed well last season, they struggled with capitalizing on corners. This season, the focus has shifted to refining those skills, and on game days, it shows, with a total of three goals resulting from corners. Titcombe’s observations reveal this progress, underscoring how the team has become more connected on the field.
Coach Jen Reidy emphasized their determined mindset and team effort after the game while addressing the players.
“We are relentless, and we are shifting, talking, working and trying. I’m loving the effort. I can look at every single face here and just be so proud,” Reidy said.
