Senior Emma Gallagher was shocked and flattered when she received an anonymous compliment on her birthday.
“It was probably the best birthday present I have ever gotten,” Gallagher said.
The compliment she received was from Redwood Compliments, a Facebook page that was created to “make Redwood a Better Place,” according to its founders.
The two anonymous founders, “Will” and “Jane,” said that they think compliments at school are hard to come by, and they hope that, by creating this Facebook page, more people will be recognized for their good character.
“We thought [giving] a compliment face-to-face was hard, and we thought one over the Internet would be easier,” Will said.
The two were inspired to start the page after overhearing negative conversations in the hallways, and they decided they wanted to change what they felt was Redwood’s judgmental culture.
“One thing we noticed about Redwood is everyone is caring about themselves and don’t think about other people,” Jane said.
Gallagher also thinks that the page helps make Redwood feel more like a community.
“When you create a page like that it unifies everyone,” Gallagher said.
To submit a compliment, students can send a Facebook message to the Redwood Compliments page with the name of the person and a three to four sentence compliment.
Once the compliment is received, Will and Jane said they attempt to make sure that it was sent in by a Redwood student for a Redwood student. They also attempt to make sure that the compliment is sincere.
Before it became an official page on Nov. 2, the site was a Facebook profile that had posted a total of 99 compliments. The page had posted 14 compliments and had 651 likes as of press time.
