An increased number of stolen bikes over the past year prompted the Redwood administration to implement new security measures in the hopes of deterring future thefts.
The new security measures include signs posted near all bike racks on campus, as well as increased supervision from campus administrators. According to Principal David Sondheim, part of the increase in thefts was caused by students failing to lock up their bikes.
“One of the things that we are trying to remind people is that a number of bikes that were stolen weren’t actually locked, so it does a lot just to remind riders to lock their bikes when they leave,” Sondheim said.
Sondheim said that the implementation of the new signs seems to be doing its job preventing thefts.
“I think our efforts are having a positive effect, and we hope they will continue to have a positive effect throughout the year,” Sondheim said.
Senior Robby Warfel, who bikes to school three to four times a week, said the implementation of the new security measures do not make him feel safer.
He adds that before the signs were implemented, he did not even feel the need to lock his bike.
Sondheim said that the school’s main goal is still to keep everyone’s bike safe while at school.
“Our efforts were twofold, but they were primarily to reduce thefts. We want everybody’s bike to be safe at school,” Sondheim said.
