One pitch and a rocket of a ground ball up the middle later, Hussain had delivered the 5-4 win, capping off the stunning Redwood win in the bottom of the seventh and final inning.
The Giants, behind since the fourth inning when Petaluma took a 3-0 lead, were down 4-2 when Brady came to the plate with two outs and men on first and second. A pitch in the dirt bounced slightly away from the Petaluma catcher, moving the two base runners into scoring position. Brady was set up to tie the game.
Brady delivered, roping a two-run triple down the right field line.
Next up was number three hitter Malik Hickerson. After two balls to start the at-bat, the Petaluma coach decided to intentionally walk both Hickerson and cleanup hitter Danny Madera.
After the two walks loaded the bases, Hussain strode into the batter’s box and sent the first pitch right back up the middle to score Brady and claim a victory.
Graham Nolan started the game for the Giants, pitching three scoreless innings before being taken out with one runner on. Henry Friedricks then came in to pitch, only to be replaced later in the inning by Morgan Trotter, who finished the game with four unearned runs and a win.
Left fielder Donovan Ahern had two RBIs and threw out a runner at the plate. He and Brady each made a number of plays in the outfield.
The Giants improved to 1-0 (0-0 in MCAL) on the season and will face Windsor High School this Monday at Redwood.
