Two of the largest teams in MCALs, with over 100 members on each side, matched up on Friday at the Redwood pool.
The Redwood girls won 107-81 and the Redwood boys won 100-82.
In addition to the expected competitive atmosphere at the rival meet, a feeling of nostalgia was in the air.
This meet was the senior swim meet, which honored all of the seniors on the Redwood team. Before any of the races took place, head coach Fred Ferroggiaro called the seniors together and individually recognized each one for their accomplishments on the team and where they are planning on going next year.
“It is kind of like a final farewell, I am trying to stay optimistic. But it’s like this is the last little bit, so we kind of have to make the most of what we have left,” senior Monica Sears said. Sears will swim for Bates College this upcoming fall.
After the first event, the girls’ team was tied with a score of 8-8, but after winning the 200 freestyle relay, Redwood continued full steam ahead to a 26 point victory over the Tam girls.
Much like the girls’ team, the boys’ team did not let up against Tam. From the get-go, Redwood was up 8-6 after the 200 freestyle, and kept pushing from there, resulting in the boys’ winning with an 18 point lead.
Midway through the meet, two unexpected attendees splashed their way through the pool
Sears swam over to shoo the guests out of senior Katie Isaacson’s lane.
“That was a good warm up for the relay!” Sears exclaimed after she got out of the pool.
Notable times for the meet include, sophomore Claire Birchenough winning the 100 meter freestyle with a time of 55:63 and 100 meter breaststroke with a time of 1:09:79. Sears also won the 500 meter freestyle with a time of 5:12:43 minutes and placed second in the 200 meter individual medley with a time of 2:11:40 minutes.
For the boys, senior Emilio DeSomma won the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 50:96 and the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:56:14. Senior Ryan Stiles also won the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 22:78.
Redwood’s next meet will take place Friday, April 8 against San Rafael at Redwood at 4 p.m.
