The girls’ varsity volleyball team won in a deciding fashion Wednesday night against San Rafael by a score of three sets to none to claim first place in the MCAL standings.
Redwood beat San Rafael in three sets (25-8, 25-9, 25-18). Despite a strong finish from San Rafael, Redwood’s height and athleticism was too much for the Bulldogs to handle.
With junior Claire Jackson injured and out of the lineup, junior McKenzie Cooke said that other people on the team needed to fill in the gap.
“We are a pretty versatile team, with a deep bench,” Cooke said. “I don’t think that [Jackson’s injury] will affect us too badly, but everyone needs to step up.”
It was clear that Redwood was in attack mode early on, and San Rafael was forced to play a strong defensive game in response.
Redwood came out strong and took an 11-5 lead to open up the match before San Rafael called a timeout to settle its players down. After the timeout, Redwood took advantage of some unforced errors by San Rafael and went on a 7-1 run which led to a 25-8 blowout in the first game.
The second game was not much different—San Rafael called another timeout after trailing 11-5 again. Behind a strong serving run by senior Kylie Kvam, the Giants pulled away with a 6-1 run to win the second game 25-9.
Redwood will look to continue its undefeated league play on Friday, Oct. 2 at Drake.
