The girls’ golf team finished the regular season with a winning record last week despite having a team comprised of five new players.
Initially, head coach Mike Kelemen was unsure if he would enough players to field a team. “I was kind of worried, but luckily we
got five more players to come out,” Kelemen said.
“Some girls said they had played with their dads on the weekend, some of them only had mini golf, and there was one girl who took lessons in fourth grade,” sophomore player Mia Poynor said.
Even with the lack of experience, Poynor said that it hasn’t been difficult for the team to work together.
“The newer people have gotten really good and they’ve improved a lot,” Poynor said. “They’re pretty consistent now.”
With a record of 9-5, they finished third in the MCAL standings.
They were one of four teams to qualify for the MCAL playoffs, trailing powerhouse teams Justin-Siena and Branson.
The team’s standout players are Poynor, the only returning non-senior, and senior Lindsay Slocum.
According to Kelemen, the two lead with their consistently low scores in matches and are mentors to their teammates.
Kelemen said that Slocum is probably the best golfer to ever play for the girls’ team at Redwood.
“I don’t think a girl as motivated and skilled and into golf as her is going to come around every year, so she’ll be pretty impossible to replace [when she graduates],” he said.
The girls’ golf NCS Qualifiers are Oct. 22 at 8:00 a.m.
