On a typical weekend morning, you can find sophomores Lana Dobrin and Courtney Morris far below the surface of the Monterey Bay surf. Ever since they were young, both have held a passion for exploring the depths of the world through scuba diving.
They are not the only students with a passion for diving. Upon starting a scuba diving club at school this semester, Dobrin and Morris were pleasantly surprised when over 30 people showed up to their first club meeting on Feb. 3.
“We’ve both have loved scuba diving for a while and wanted to start a club at Redwood to bring the diving community together,” Dobrin said.
With the guidance of science teacher Mitch Cohen, Dobrin and Morris are working to schedule group dives and hope to create a closer community among Redwood divers, no matter their skill level.
“During meetings we talk about different experiences and options and different places to go diving,” Morris said.
The club is currently watching the documentary “Descending,” directed by Andre Dupuis, to learn about new dive sites around the world and how divers are impacting the oceans, lakes, and rivers of our planet.
While most club members are certified divers, there are several students who have yet to be certified. Part of their meetings consist of helping these students study for a written test that they will need to pass in order to get in the water.
Dobrin and Morris are excited to expand their club even further and encourage students to stop by club meetings on Tuesdays at lunch in room 215, no matter their scuba diving background.
