Kid Ink’s new Album “Full Speed” rotates from catchy club songs to music that truly narrates his life. “Full Speed” is Ink’s second album and shows his gained confidence since his debut album, “My Own Lane.”
In this new album, Ink collaborates with artists R. Kelly, Usher, Tinashe, Migos, Trey Songz, Young Thug, and DeJ Loaf.
Ink stays true to his original beats that contain appealing lyrics embedded into synthesized sounds. Ink tends to stay away from the more instrumental beats such as guitar, piano, and violin.
The album begins with a memorable narrative, “What it Feels Like,” in which he tells the story of a day in his life. He explains the fast paced tendency of his lifestyle and how he copes with it.
In “Hotel,” Ink sings about the women in his life in collaboration with hip hop artist Chris Brown. The lyrics are about having girlfriends, but also having other girls on the side whom they can’t resist. The hip hop beat is very melodious and it derives from the topic of the song.
In “Dolo” and “About Mine,” Ink focuses on the club scene. He sings about the environment and energy of a club along with the women in the club. Although the topic of these songs is very overdone and cliche, the songs are nonetheless very unforgettable.
“Cool Back” features a new technique for Ink, where he tests out the “whispering style,” of whispering lyrics throughout the song, instead of singing or rapping them. This is a new style for Ink, as he has never sung in a hushed tone, yet the song still is appealing to the ear.
The song on the album that has had the most mainstream success is “Body Language,” where Ink collaborated with Usher and Tinashe. This song has a very charismatic flow and delivery. It is sultry, but fun at the same time, and it examines how body language allows women to communicate without talking.
“Full Speed” is a very compelling album in which Kid Ink combines energetic instrumentals with a synthetic beat and creates an aesthetically pleasing album. The snares and the melodic lyrics make for an outstanding album, lacking lyrical substance, but still catchy and appealing.
