Boys’ varsity basketball makes comeback over Tam

The boys’ varsity basketball team captured a win over Tam in Tuesday night’s thrilling matchup at Redwood.

Despite trailing early in the game, the Giants pulled out a 48-45 victory after making defensive adjustments in the second half.  At multiple points throughout the first half, Tam was up by as many as 10 points.

“We didn’t do a very good job in the first quarter, but we picked it up on defense” said head coach Steve Compagno. “We started executing our defensive game plan. They looked to attack the middle all the time, we want to keep them out of there.”

After being down 21-11 after the first quarter, Redwood minimized their deficit to 30-27 entering halftime.  Due in part to a 17-4 run by the Giants during the second and third quarters, the game was tied at 34 at the end of the third, which led to Redwood’s three point victory.

According to junior William Breck, Redwood’s endurance led to their comeback win.

“We were way more conditioned than them.  Preseason we did a lot of running and workouts, so by the fourth quarter they were really tired and we still had a lot of energy from our starters and subs,” Breck said.

Redwood had the defensive upper hand by recording 33 total rebounds and seven steals compared to Tam’s 28 rebounds and four steals.  However, Redwood’s sixteen turnovers was one more than Tam’s.

“We played hard.  We didn’t have a great shooting night, we turned the ball over in inopportune times, but we’re still learning how to play as a team, and I’m proud of those guys,” Compagno said.

Senior Peter Kennedy led the Giants with 12 points and six rebounds, whi

le Breck and senior Jack Bronson each put up 11 points.  Tam’s Lorenzo Jordan led the Hawks with 24 points, 19 of which came in the first half.

With the win, Redwood (4-1 in MCAL, 9-8 overall) moves up to third in league standings, and plays at Novato on Friday at 7:30.
