On Thursday, Jan. 16, girls’ varsity soccer secured a 2-0 victory over the Terra Linda Trojans in a thrilling game, displaying leadership and teamwork. The team now sits in third place in the Marin County Athletic League.
The game took place at Terra Linda, starting out with high intensity as both teams made efforts to dominate early on. The Trojans’ defense, led by junior goalkeeper Josephine Fetterman-Riggle, made key stops in the opening minutes that kept the Giants off the board. However, Redwooddictated much of the possession and maintained relentless pressure.
Senior Sarah Farese opened the scoring in the first half with a goal from inside the penalty box, giving the Giants a 1-0 advantage. This unlocked a wave of enthusiasm for the players as they celebrated the lead. Junior Roxie Monty felt this first goal showed the improved connection within the team.
“Our team dynamic has really improved this year,” Monty said. “It was exciting to see my teammates playing so well.”
Both teams emerged from the half-time break with a renewed sense of energy. The Giants’ backline defense, marshaled by junior defender Holly Thomas, was very firm, repelling a number of Trojans upfield. Thomas showed significant on-field leadership in protecting the one-goal advantage.
As Terra Linda pushed forward, Redwood focused on the counterattack. Farese struck again in the later stages of the game, securing her second goal and cementing the Giants’ victory. Her performance provided a display of her importance to the Giants’ offensive strategy.
“Securing two points was crucial for us, as it strengthens our position on the leaderboard and demonstrates our ability to rise to the challenge,” Thomas said.
The victory also mirrored the preparation and flexibility of the team.
“We practice every day to prepare for games, but we also prioritize recovery and injury management. Our training sessions are very intentional, focusing on strategies and techniques to counter specific opponents,” Thomas said. “This game held significance because Terra Linda has shown considerable improvement over the years.”
The team’s next game will take place at University High School on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 12 p.m. This matchup is expected to be a critical and challenging game for the Giants’ as they aim to build on their recent momentum and solidify their standing in the league. Fans are encouraged to attend and show their enthusiasm, as the players have been working tirelessly to fine-tune their strategies and deliver a strong performance. With both teams bringing their best to the field, the game promises to be a competitive showdown.
