Girls’ varsity volleyball advanced to the Division II NCS championship this Saturday with a 3-0 win over Las Lomas yesterday.

Redwood battled back from late deficits in both the second and third sets.

“I’m really proud of them,” coach Katie Pease said. “They were mentally tough being down in the second and third sets. They came together as a team and fought back as a team, and they executed as individuals and did what they needed to do.”

Redwood, the number one seed in NCS, easily won the first set with a score of 25-17, although the second and third sets proved more of a challenge.

Redwood won the second set 31-29 after overcoming several Las Lomas match points. After falling behind again in the third set, the Giants won 26-24 to clinch the victory.

“I think we really came together as a team at the end of each of the three games and we really believed in each other to pull through,” said freshman Mckenzie Cooke.

Although senior setter Sierra Dawson missed the game due to illness, senior Jordan Gray and freshman Mari Molina stepped in admirably to set up the Giants’ fearsome hitters.

The Giants had great success with their kills all night, landing several powerful shots in front of helpless Las Lomas defenders.

“We’ve been working a lot on our cross court shots,” sophomore hitter Elly Lundberg said. “The outsides did a really good job of doing those and those were a really big part of our success. We played tough and we didn’t ever give up the fight.”

The team will focus on improving their serves for the NCS championship game.

“Our serving could improve. We missed a lot of serves in clutch situations so we need to get better at that,” Lundberg said.

The championship game will be played this Saturday, Nov. 23, at Redwood at 7:00 PM against third-seeded Carondolet, an all-girls Catholic school in Concord, California.
