On Sept. 19, girls’ varsity field hockey hosted Marin Catholic (MC) at Ghilotti Field in a highly anticipated rivalry matchup. Leadership ran a game night, providing shirts and pizza to all attendees, which b
rought a large audience to the game. Despite Marin Catholic’s strong attack and solid goalkeeping, Redwood fought back with a strong offense and teamwork, winning the game 2-1.
Redwood consistently carried the ball up the field into the Wildcat half, putting pressure on the defense. This led to many corners for the Giants but MC continually knocked the ball out of bounds, preventing any goals.
On the other half, the Redwood defense stood strong, preventing any serious attacks from MC. Eventually, junior Lucy Jeffers scored for the Giants, and then senior Jane Broderick scored the second goal. Broderick, a forward, was awarded the player of the game and was crucial in leading the Giants to victory. Senior Francesca Mitchell appreciated how hard the team worked as a whole.
“[We] executed our skills really well, and I was happy to see all the passing with the ball moving up the field a lot, and our defense really locking down,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell also emphasized the importance of strong communication, and how that helped them win the game.
“I think we communicated really strongly as a team and used our words,” Mitchell said.
Redwood put a lot of positive energy, constantly supporting one another, and they reaped the positive results.
They were cohesive and connected as an entire team, leading to strong defense and passing. The Giants’ next match is Sept. 23rd at City College of San Francisco against Lick Wilmerding.
