Donald Kreps, Redwood’s first principal who served from 1957-1979, passed away the morning of Oct. 28 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Kreps contributed to Redwood through his role as a principal, teacher, counselor, and mentor to all students and colleagues who attended Redwood over the duration of his tenure.

He was hired prior to the construction of Redwood, and participated in the creation of the school and hiring of all initial staff, according to Sue Chelini, who was hired during Kreps’ tenure and still works for the TUHSD.

“He was a hero to me, because he would trust the teachers to do the best they could,” Chelini said.  “He brought out the best in everyone the best in the students, the best in the staff, and the best in the community.”

His funeral will be held on Monday, Nov. 4 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Sebastian’s Church in Greenbrae.

Kreps is survived by his wife of 67 years, four children, and nine grandchildren.
