Athletic Hall of Fame welcomes new members

Four alumni have been inducted this year into the Redwood Sports Hall of Fame.

Jerry Piro, Russell Smith, Peter Woodring, and Scott Munn will each have a plaque mounted with their names in the Dick Hart Gymnasium. They will be honored at a banquet next spring, along with next year’s inductees. This will be the first induction class since 2009.

“I started this all four years ago on Redwood’s big [50th]  birthday, and we have been ongoing,” said Mike Dibley, physical education teacher and a committee member of the Redwood Sports Hall of Fame.

Piro participated in baseball and basketball his junior and senior year, when the basketball team won the championships. After graduating in 1970, he attended Santa Clara University.

“I got a free education so it was wonderful,” Piro said. “I went to a lot of places I never been to, or had the opportunity to go to. It was great.”

After college, Piro played a season of professional basketball in Holland.

Years later after his basketball career ended, he returned to the sport by coaching high school basketball at Marin Catholic, Branson, and Redwood.

“Basketball gave me a lot of opportunities I may not have had,” Piro said, “It was something for me to put in a little time and to give back to the sport.”

He was head basketball coach at Marin Catholic, Branson, and Redwood.

Peter Woodring played on Redwood’s varsity soccer team for three years before graduating in 1986. He also played soccer during the four years he attended UC Berkeley.

After college, he continued to play soccer, extending his career overseas in Germany and Denmark, as well as playing on the U.S. National Team.

Scott Munn rowed during his years at Redwood, competing on the Varsity 4+ national championship team in 1987 and the Varsity 8+ in 1988.

He graduated in 1988 and went on to place fourth in the 1992 Olympics 8+ team and World champion in 1995.

Russell Smith played on the baseball and basketball teams at Redwood. He was on Redwood’s first league championship teams in both sports.

He continued playing sports in college after graduating in 1966. At College of Marin, Smith participated on the baseball and golf teams for one year and basketball for two years. He went on to UC Davis and played two years of basketball.

Twenty-three athletes have been inducted in the history of the Redwood Hall of Fame, with majority of these inductees being male athletes. None of the athletes inducted this year were female, though Dibley said that the committee has been looking for balance in the nomination process.
