Jazz band musicians presented their semester performance in the Little Theater on Wednesday, Nov. 30. Separated into two sets, the Combos — featuring small groups of musicians — started the performance and the Big Band — including all instruments — concluded the night. With classes outside of school weekly on Tuesdays, student musicians from all grade levels prepared for the concert together. Local pianist Lee Bloom has been working with the Combos pieces since the beginning of the semester, and the Big Band was led by music teacher John Mattern. Moving beyond playing the written sheet music, Mattern recognized the progress displayed throughout their practice and in the final show.
“To get into the song, to get into the solo and to bring [the audience] into it is the real artistic part of all this. We spend so much time learning how to play these instruments it’s almost like finally you get to the point where you get enough chops and start making music,” Mattern said.

Starting with songs from the swing era, the Big Band continues through the timeline of jazz and performs “Watermelon Man” by Herbie Hancock, a notable American piece from the 60s.
