On Tuesday, Oct. 11, the girls’ varsity tennis team played a match against Terra Linda High School. The match ended with a final score of 7-0 in favor of the Giants. For this particular match, the underclassmen of the team got the opportunity to play without the help of the seniors. They played with strong intensity and won all of their sets. Head coach Marlies Zeisler commended her team for their kind spirit in response to their victory.

“We have a really great team and I saw good sportsmanship and very fair line calls, which makes it so the match goes by calmly,” Zeisler said.

Preparing her backhand, Sienna Rouas focuses on returning the ball.

While Redwood dominated, Terra Linda put up a good fight, playing each point to the very end. Zeisler admired Terra Linda’s determination through the entirety of the match, and acknowledged where Redwood could improve for future games.

“Terra Linda did well by chasing every ball down and getting the ball back [over the net],” Zeisler said. “I think we could get better at our footwork, it’s something that will elevate our game to the next level. Then we can track any ball and we are in the right position to hit the ball.”

Zeisler praised freshman Maisy Wyss for her hustle during her match. Wyss played a singles match and won with a final score of 2-0. She swept both the first and second sets with a score of 6-0. Similar to Wyss, freshman Sienna Rouas defeated her opponent in both sets, winning the first by 6-0, and the second by 6-0. Despite Rouas’s impressive score, she noticed areas that she could improve on. Nonetheless, she corrected her form and executed her swings powerfully.

“I was struggling a little bit with my forehand and I kept hitting right into the net. So, I took a step back from that and readjusted my swing. I felt that towards the end of the game I was getting them over how I wanted,” Rouas said.

Wyss applauded her teammates, specifically sophomore Jordan Morotto, for her upbeat attitude throughout her sets.

“Morotto has really stuck out to me because she never gets frustrated. She really pushes through and she can come back if she’s down a few games, I find that really inspiring,” Wyss said.

Tossing the ball into the air, junior Lindsay Reed sets up for an ace.

As the match progressed, sophomore Livia Klampus closed out her match with a triumph, winning both her first and second sets with a score of 6-0. Klampus stayed focused throughout her match and showed off her powerful strikes.

The team plans to use this win as momentum for the remainder of the season as they pave their way to the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) playoffs. Join these determined Giants at the Redwood Buchanan Tennis Courts for their MCAL championship playoffs on Oct. 25, at 3 p.m.
