Board Policy: Year In Review

JOHN WRIGHT, a school board member, explains the details of the proposed board policies up for discussion on January 23.

While many decisions are made by the Tam District School Board each year, the Bark took a more in depth look at three of the most important decisions.

Decision to not cancel TEAM:

On Jan. 25, the Board announced that it was considering canceling the TEAM program at the end of the 2012-2013 school year. To keep the program alive, a TEAM member started an onlined petition that gained over 2,500 signatures. At the first meeting after the potential cancellation was announced, many members of the program attended to voice their opinions and on Feb. 8, the Board voted to keep TEAM alive for the next year. Decision to renovate Ghilotti Field:

The Board voted in March to renovate Ghilotti Field, currently a grass field, into an artificial turf field. The Board will supply $500,000 for the renovation and the rest of the money will come from the community. The current field is located behind the South Lawn and is in poor conditions. Ghilotti Field is used as practice space by the lacrosse and soccer teams.

Decision to change curriculum:

After discovering 19-year-old policies that promoted heterosexuality in the language of Social Issues classes, sophomore Jake Mates told the Board that it was time to change the wording of the policies. The Social Issues curriculum instructed teachers to “teach honor and respect for monogamous heterosexual marriage,” but was rewritten to state that “instruction and materials shall teach respect for marriage, committed relationships, and the diversity of stable family structures in our community.”
