The boys’ varsity tennis team conquered another challenge on their way to the MCAL championship, as they swept Justin Siena on Tuesday, March 27.

The Giants showed significant strength during the matches, claiming victory in all nine they played. The win puts Redwood at 5-0 in MCAL, as they are the formidable favorite to win the championship.

Justin Siena arrived short-handed for the match having three fewer players than the requirement. Therefore, this resulted in three matches being forfeited.

Star player junior Stevie Gould, who is committed to University of Washington to play tennis, shined as he won both of his sets 6-0. Gould is currently number one on the Redwood tennis ladder which is determined by skill.

“I felt pretty good today and it was a warm day, and I thought I placed my serves very well, my opponent returned some of my serves, then it came down to my placement with the ball and my ability to focus,” said Gould after the victory.

Sophomore David Tierney, who is primarily a doubles player, demonstrated his versatility by winning his singles match 6-2 and 6-3.

“I played very well today. This was only my second singles match ever and it was really fun and I hope I can continue playing singles. The team came out strong and showed great sportsmanship towards our opponent,” said Tierney.

The closest match played was one of the doubles matches when sophomore Justin Langs and senior Devon Grayson teamed up to beat the doubles players of Justin Siena in two sets that scored 6-1 and 7-5.

“Everyone is getting better as the season goes on, but unfortunately we have not had any close matches this year and I don’t see any team in MCAL being much of a challenge, but we hope to see better competition as we progress through NCS and states,” Gould said.

Gould and Tierney have similar viewpoints about the team this year, as they comment that everyone on the team has been progressing throughout the year and improving their individual skills. Gould explained that many of the players on the team are younger, but with more experience they will be able to improve their game. He sees himself as a role model to he younger players on the team.

“We came out here and showed what Redwood tennis is all about,” said Tierney.

The Giants look forward to their next match on Tuesday, April 3, at home against Drake.
