Broken hoop forces cancellation of basketball games

Broken hoop forces cancellation of basketball games

On Dec. 7, a basketball hoop in the gym broke due to a malfunctioning safety lock, forcing the cancellation of four games – freshmen boys, JV boys, freshmen girls, and varsity girls.

Even though the hoop was fixed Monday morning, it is unlikely that any of the games will be rescheduled, setting the varsity girls’ team one game behind in their journey to the North Coast Section Championships.

In order to have an advantage going into the NCS, the team should have as many games as possible under its belt, said Athletic Director Jessica Peisch.

Peisch said the teams would have played their games in the small gym, however the door handle is too close to the court, creating a safety problem in the event of a player falling.

Another possibility was the North-South court in the gym, but the court was too close to the bleachers, creating another safety issue.

Because of these safety issues the games were cancelled.

“We had to put safety first and cancel the games,” Peisch said.
