JV girls’ water polo beats MA in a close game

The JV girls’ water polo team pulled through for a tough 11-10 win against Marin Academy in their fifth league game on Tuesday.

In the first three quarters, neither team could hold on to the lead. However, in the fourth quarter Redwood was able to pull ahead by one goal. A strong offense led by sophomore Maddie Baker and freshman Alex McGregor helped fuel the win, along with numerous saves by freshman goalie Katie Treene.

At the end of the second quarter, a shot slipped by Treene, tying the game at 6-6. The Giants recovered by scoring two goals in the third quarter, and maintaining a robust defense in the last two quarters.

Two back-to-back goals by McGregor and a closing goal by Baker in the final quarter held the lead for Redwood.

McGregor scored four goals, one of which was assisted by Baker. Baker also scored two goals herself. Both said that the team was having a great season and has a great atmosphere.

According to Baker and McGregor, the roster is larger this year, which results in limited playing time.

Freshman Ellen Dannerbeck had two goals and sophomore Daniela Schwartz scored one.

“I definitely think that we could improve by staying on defense and blocking the shots when they are trying to pass,” Baker said.

The Giants will play Terra Linda on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m.
