Gearing up for a chip, senior Sander French competes in a match at the Peacock Gap golf course on Thursday, March 12.

The boys’ varsity golf team snatched second place at the MCAL championship on Monday, April 27.

After defending the title four years in a row, the Giants shot 394 as team, second to the Branson Bulls, who shot 375.

Although the Giants didn’t claim first place, they performed above expectations, as  they were seeded sixth coming into the championship.

“Our team came in as a higher seed, sixth out of sixth, and we all had good rounds, compared to the other teams where only a few kids on each team had good rounds,” said junior  co-captain Nick Laub, who tied for second place with an  individual score of 73 strokes.

With an additional three golfers breaking 82 strokes, the team held itself in a position to secure second place. They stood 10 strokes under Justin Siena’s 404 strokes.

“We work well together, we trust each other, we have our strengths and weaknesses, and we come together in competition really well,” Laub said.

The team is looking to compete in the NCS D-1 championship securing a spot in the qualifying meet on Monday, May 4.

“It’ll be a fun day, but it’s hard to win. In previous years, our team has been very good, but we’ve only come up in the top 20,” Laub said.
