A house fire roared throughout a Marin RV park at 10 a.m. this morning, demolishing a small trailer home and sending thick, black smoke into the atmosphere.

The trailer home fire, located near Trader Joe’s off of Redwood Highway in Greenbrae, was potentially caused by a the resident falling asleep with a cigarette still lighted, according to Central Marin Police Sergeant Paul Barrolaza.

“It’s suspected that a gentleman fell asleep with a cigarette in bed, and the cigarette caused the mattress to catch on fire,” he said.

The man in the home reportedly endured burns to his hand following the ignition of the fire and might have had a pet inside as well, according to Barrolaza.

Multiple fire trucks and dozens of firemen responded within three minutes of the incident, along with many scared neighbors and other witnesses who watched the fire destroy the house.

“We had an officer in the area, so we responded quickly,” Barrolaza said.

Barrolaza commented on the protocol the authorities follow when dealing with a typical house fire.

“We get a lot of neighbors who want to go back in their homes. They’re obviously very emotional, so we have to control that and allow the firefighters to do their own thing,” he said.

The Central Marin fire units worked together to control the fire within the hour, allowing no further damage to other homes or citizens around it.
