Boys’ freshman basketball team battles for close defeat against Pinole Valley

The freshman boys’ basketball team pulled a last-minute win in a tight 50-45 home game against Pinole Valley on Saturday, Nov. 29.

With only half a minute left in the fourth quarter, Drew Jacks clinched a Redwood victory by scoring the last point from the three-meter line, making the third preseason win in a row for the freshman team.

The two teams essentially were tied until the beginning of the third quarter, when Pinole Valley scored four points to grab the lead.  After a timeout called by coach Conor Flaherty, the Redwood freshmen returned energized, scoring a quick nine points and building momentum that left them with a 35-28 lead entering the fourth quarter.

But after only three minutes of the fourth quarter, the game was again tied, with a score of 39-39.  In an intense finish, the Giants were able to show the crowd another win, when they added 11 points more to bring a final result of 50-45.

Flaherty explained that the strong team effort and depth were main contributors to the win. “The depth of our roster definitely had a great impact on the outcome of the game today,” Flaherty said.

This was the third preseason game before the preseason tournament at Elsie Allen High School, which will happen from Dec. 1 to Dec. 5. The last home game of the preseason will be played Dec. 12.
