Varsity tennis prevails over Northgate High School in first round of NCS

The girls’ varsity tennis team defeated Northgate High School in the first round of the Division I North Coast Section playoffs on Tuesday, Nov. 11, winning six of their seven matches.

Redwood dominated in the singles matches, where sophomore Lindsay Thornton, junior Abby Mullins, and freshman Devon Cusack maintained a 6-1 lead through both of their sets. Junior Lauren Wolfe kept pace with the team, winning her first set 6-1 and her second 6-2.

In doubles, sophomore Erica Pohl and freshman Molly Kehoe battled with Northgate, tieing their first set 6-6, but losing the tie-breaking point. They lost their second set 7-5.

Senior Keiko Kamei and freshman Jacqueline Massey-Blake, as well as junior Geneva Gist and sophomore Natalie Epstein, won 6-1 in each of their doubles sets, ensuring a victory for the Giants.

The Giants’ next play at Miramonte High School on Friday, Nov. 14.
