The freshman football team lost 33-6 at home against San Marin on Wednesday, Oct. 1.

Redwood persevered throughout the game despite six injuries on the field and multiple fumbles that allowed for San Marin to take the win.

“If [San Marin] scores early, then we just get down on ourselves and aren’t the same team we were in the beginning,” said freshman Alex Diaz, who pulled his hamstring in the first quarter.

Freshman quarterback Wyatt McCullough was not able to take the team to the end zone despite several completed plays.  San Marin overcame Redwood’s defense, sacking McCullough several times.

San Marin scored a touchdown within the first few minutes of the game, followed by a successful punt from Redwood’s kicker Grant Barnes that traveled over 60 yards.  However, after multiple turnovers and incomplete passes by Redwood, the first quarter ended 6-0 in favor of San Marin.

Neither team technically scored in the third quarter. A ball was intercepted and run into the end zone by San Marin, but they were given a penalty that invalidated the touchdown.

As the game progressed, San Marin received and scored another touchdown.  Minutes later, freshman Jackson Holscher scored the first and only touchdown for the Giants, leaving the score at 27-6.  However, San Marin bounced back, closing the game at 33-6.

Coach Rob Hobart said he is grateful for players like freshman Matthew Mulcahey who demonstrate their “play hard and practice hard” mentality. This mentality is what Hobart believes will be the key to success in the second half of the season.

The team’s next game will be the Homecoming game against Novato High School on Oct. 11 at 9:30 am.
