Girls’ lacrosse seeks return to top of MCALs

After finishing one game short of a shot at the MCAL title last year, the girls’ varsity lacrosse team is vying for another chance at the MCAL title as they begin their season this Thursday against Sonoma Valley.

From 2007-2010, the girls ’ varsity lacrosse team rattled off four straight MCAL titles, but the tables have turned recently, with Marin Catholic winning the past three titles.

The team captains this season will be seniors Natalie Breuner, Ariella Rosenthal, and Julia Schnoll.

According to Breuner, the team’s preseason workouts have not been limited, despite not having a designated trainer.

“We took it upon ourselves to be our own trainers,” said Breuner. “We took old conditioning tactics and techniques from past years and improved just from previous experience.”

According to Schnoll, the team has spent a lot of the off-season working on clearing the ball, which involves getting the ball away from their own net and into the midfield.

The girls’ toughest match this season should come against Marin Catholic on March 20. The Marin Catholic team eliminated Redwood in the MCAL semifinals last year.

Last year, the girls’ averaged 11 goals a game and a 44 percent save percentage on shots on goal.

Ariella Rosenthal led the team with 49 goals and returning player Christine Cook was the team’s main goalie for the duration of the season.

MCAL playoffs for girls’ lacrosse begin on May 6, with the finals coming on May 9 at Drake High School.
