Boys’ varsity lacrosse loses nail-biter to Oregon team

The boys’ varsity lacrosse team narrowly lost their first game of the St. Ignatius tournament to Lakeridge High School 5-4 at Redwood on Thursday afternoon.

In the team’s second year participating in the competitive tournament, Redwood faced off against Oregon’s defending state champions shorthanded, missing three senior starters.

Senior Jack Cathcart attacks a strong Lakeridge defense that held the Giants to a season-low four goals.

In a very physical game filled with hard hits and questionable calls, Redwood had a first quarter lead of 1-0, but fell behind after allowing three goals the following quarter, and two more in the third.  Redwood’s two-goal third quarter and additional fourth quarter goal was not enough for a comeback victory.

With the absence of leaders Patrick Tracy, Peter Mascheroni, and Jon Gibbs, the Giants relied on other players to step up.

Freshman Jack Elders led the team with two goals, to go along with goals from sophomore Andrew Marshall and senior Matt Kennis.  Senior Liam Bourke contributed with a team-high six ground balls to add to Kennis’ five.

Lakeridge was highlighted by shut-down defense and impressive goal keeping, holding Redwood to a season low in goals.

The Giants play their next game today against Tam.
