Four Redwood alums, one coach, and two avid contributors were inducted into the Redwood Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, March 8.

The four alums are Leslie Airola Murveit, Crissy Cerkel Peluso, Ryan Myers, Cory Shakarian, the coach was Doug Basham, and the two contributors who earned special recognition were Lynn and Henry Moody.

“I feel good about the group of people chosen because of the diversity of the people chosen, and because it wasn’t just football, basketball, and baseball players,” said Marilee Rogers, a member of the Alumni Association.

According to Marilee Rogers, towards the beginning of the creation of the Hall of Fame athletes were just nominating their friends and it was predominantly male football, basketball, and baseball players.  Now the sports and gender are becoming more equally distributed.

The athletes inducted this year included a tennis player, a track star, a swimmer, and a basketball player, though most of them played multiple sports.

Their accomplishments must have had a long lasting impact, as nominations for the Hall of Fame occur at least 15 years after graduation.

“Although many of the people have gone on to accomplish a lot athletically outside of Redwood, they’re primarily chosen for their accomplishments while at Redwood,” said Rogers.

The Redwood track was named after Basham, while the varsity baseball field was named after the Moody family.

This is the last time the event, which is hosted by the alumni association will be held annually.

After this it will be held every other year, alternating with the ceremony for those inducted into the Avenue of Giants.
