Girls’ varsity lacrosse lost to Novato 9-4 in the Giants’ first scrimmage of the season on Thursday.

Redwood responded to an early 4-0 Novato lead when senior Ariella Rosenthal managed to score a goal against Novato’s strong defense. However, the Hornets had managed to keep the 4-1 lead into halftime.

“I feel like we could have done the little things better like connecting some of the passes in the midfield, and picking up ground balls more,” said sophomore midfielder and defender Lauren Watkins.

Seconds before the first half ended, sophomore Kendra Loo, assisted by Emma Mulvey, retrieved a loose Novato ball and attempted toscore, but failed.

“We were getting doubled, tripled, even quadruple-teamed by them,” said junior goalie Christine Cook.

Throughout the game Novato maintained most of their possessions of the ball.

“Overall we were strong from both ends of the field, defense did a really good job mainly because Novato’s good at getting the draws and keeping it over on our defensive side,” Cook said.

The Giants managed to recover from their faulty start and end the game with a score of 9-4.

“I thought this game was a good start compared to last year,” Watkins said. “Everyone’s individual and overall team skills have really improved. We’re pretty much the same team with the same players from last year but stronger.”
