For some, the sexual undertones in Redwood’s Sept. 22 fall sports rally were distasteful, disrespectful, and unnecessary.  But for most, every aspect of the rally, from the dancing to the pantsing, brought a whole new level of spirit to a Redwood event.

Principal Greg Duffey is one of those concerned with the message the rally sent.  “I think there is an excessive desire on the part of some students to be sexually suggestive or show off in a sexual way,” said Duffey.
Others believed that the sexuality was a result of outside influences.  “I thought it was very sexual, but it’s a definite reflection of society,” said Spanish teacher Cheryl Mochalski.
However, despite several scattered concerns, the response to the rally was positive.  “I thought it was a tad inappropriate, but that is today’s culture.  I think it was the best rally we’ve had in years,” said English teacher Martha Allen.
Student response to the rally was unanimous.  “I thought it was cool,” said freshman Fernando Pons.  One of the rally’s shirtless dancing soccer players, senior Ali Meykadeh, said “Sexuality is healthy.”
Another reason students thought the rally was successful was its spontaneity, beginning with shirtless senior Ian Glover, who charged onto the floor and danced with the cheerleaders.
His actions were interpreted in various ways.  What he may have considered an innocent show of spirit others saw as a sign of disrespect and an attempt to steal the cheerleader’s spotlight.  Dean of Student Activities Lorraine Trollinger said, “The only thing I felt was inappropriate was in Glover’s action.  If his intention was to dance ‘with’ the cheerleaders, he missed his mark.  However, the overall rally was great.  Students prepared in advance and a lot of time and energy went into it.  For those who think Redwood has lost its spirit, they missed the rally.”
