According to trends as reported in the 1970s Barks, skirts just above the knee were in fashion, unheard of before that time.

Another popular look for girls in the ‘70s was the Western look, which included jeans tucked into short boots,  wide belts, shirts with contrasting yokes and Stetson hats.

Students also wore shimmery solid-colored blouses in teal blue, ruby red, peacock green and muted shades of purple, accessorizing with belts, cords and sashes to emphasize the waist.

However, the administration began to crack down on student dress when this mellow style of dressing became less reserved.

One girl was intercepted before even entering the building and asked to change when she arrived wearing very short shorts. Other students around that time were also pulled out of class for similar offenses, according to a 1970s issue of the Bark.

The administration defended the disciplinary action with the Educational Code Article 2 Section 302, which states “a pupil who goes to school without proper attention being given to personal cleanliness or neatness of dress may be sent home.” The handbook also said that “students should wear clothing which is neat and suitable for their chief occupation at school — learning.”
