ENJOYING THE DAY, the boy on the left shows off his Adidas wardrobe, and the girl on the right rides to school on her moped with a classic bubble skirt and letterman jacket.
From the rockers to the preps to the deadheads to the mods, the ‘80s was a crazy time for fashion. Each clique at Redwood had their own distinct style of dress.

According to social studies teacher Erik Berridge, Class of 1987, the “rockers” often wore Metallica t-shirts and jeans tight all the way down to the ankles. The “preps” wore polo shirts with their collars popped up. The mods were known for wearing stylish outfits with crunchy greaser hair. Deadheads wore extremely baggy clothing with long hair.

Berridge said he didn’t fall into any of the cliques above. Instead, he choose comfort over style.

“I would wear jeans or shorts and t-shirts to school practically every day with sweatshirts and I wore flip flops a lot,” Berridge said.

According to Berridge, shoulder pads were also popular earlier in the ‘80s. Girls wore shoulder pads in their tailored blouses.

However, no matter which group a student fell in, the must have item was Vans, according to Berridge.

“Vans were really popular, we all had Vans,” he said. “You had to have Vans. It was key.”

Other hot items were leg warmers, and the colors lime green and hot pink.
