In a span of nine days, girls’ sports captured the MCAL titles in varsity lacrosse, soccer and softball.
While the lacrosse and softball teams were the defending MCAL champions, the soccer team won league for the first time in seven years. Winning the championship was a goal the seniors had been working towards for the past four years.
“We’ve been working since freshman year to win MCAL,” senior Ashly Langford said. “It hasn’t happened in six years so it is definitely a huge dream come true to have it happen.”
The girls’ lacrosse team beat arch-rival Marin Catholic 10-8 in the championship game, earning the team its fourth straight pennant. The win was the fourth consecutive time Redwood beat MC in the championship game.
Junior Lauren Ott attributes the continued success to a team-first mentality, contrary to previous years.
“The seasons before people were more concerned with themselves,” Ott said. “In the past it was more individuals playing, but now we rely on each other more.”
Langford felt that the soccer team winning the championship for the first time in seven years had a lot to do with teamwork as well.
“I think it was a matter of our team coming together and realizing that we had to work together, and we had to put it together on the field,” said Langford. “We had amazing talent this year from the freshman to the seniors. I think it was a real group effort.”
Langford noted that winning the MCAL title was especially sweet, considering they beat Tam 1-0 on a golden goal by Caroline Logan, senior, with only minutes left in the game.
“Before the game, I was definitely nervous,” said Langford. “It was frustrating going into it and having Tam in the finals all four years. But then again I felt we had the courage to do it, and the strength and power to. When we won, I was so proud of everyone because everyone contributed and we dominated the game.”
Kaela Trutner, senior, a first baseman on the softball team, said she felt nervous before the MCAL title game, even though she played in it the previous three years.
“Before every big game I think my teammates and I definitely have a little bit of nerves,” Trutner said. “Even having won it 5 years in a row, it’s not this run-of-the-mill thing.”
For Ott and the girls’ lacrosse team, their season ended with a 16-8 loss to Carondolet of Concord in NCS. The loss was the team’s fourth straight time being knocked out in the quarterfinals.
“It’s bittersweet,” said Ott. “I’m glad it’s over. I’m really tired and I have school and everything, but I have too much free time and I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’ll also miss the seniors a lot because they were one of my favorite classes and it will be weird without them.”
Although the softball team’s hopes of an NCS championship were dashed in a 3-1 loss to Montgomery on Saturday, Trutner believes winning the MCAL title is still meaningful.
“You always want more, but its good to have MCALs behind us,” she said. “It’s really nice to reaffirm that we’re once again the strongest in our area. It’s especially nice because we know everyone on the other teams.”
Langford and the soccer team capped off their season by winning the NCS title for the first time in six years.
“We just played like we’ve been playing all season and got the win,” Langford said. “It was an amazing accomplishment.”
