The California State Education board released the API scores last week, and once again Redwood placed high on the list.
In the Academic Performance Index [API], Redwood scored an 885, while the average for the state’s high schools was 714 for 9-12 graders in 2009.
The API score summarizes a school’s performance on the Spring STAR test and the California High School Exit Examination.
API scores are created from a combination of two rankings. The first, a statewide rank among all the scores in California. The second is based upon certain demographic criteria that places each school with 100 others similar to it.
For the past decade Redwood has been able to increase its score each year. These scores have earned Redwood the highest statewide rank of “10.”
Assistant Superintendent Steve Butler hopes the scores will rise but believes that while a high score is important, there are still other things that should be dealt with before hand.
“Of course I would like for the API scores to go up, but I want to focus on the students that are not scoring as well as they could,” Butler said.
