Though Jake Anderson moved to Marin from Singapore in his sophomore year, there is no doubt he has left his mark on Redwood Athletics.

As a member of the varsity football team and the Marin Highlander rugby team during his three years at Redwood, Anderson became known as one of the most valuable team members.

“He really embodies the work ethic and what it means to be a Highlander, and deep down he’s a sensitive soul,” said fellow team member Rob Spurzem.

Anderson has always been considered a leader in both rugby and football due to his ability to be vocal and lead by example.

Despite his inability to play rugby during his junior year because of a torn meniscus, Anderson has excelled in the sport and will be playing in the fall for UC Berkeley, one of the top rugby schools in the country.

“I am nervous because it is the best team in the nation, so it’s not going to be easy, but I’m excited to play with the best competition, which I don’t always get to play with around here,” Anderson said.

Though Anderson only began playing rugby his sophomore year, the sport has always been a part of his life, being that his parents are Australian and his brother also played in high school.

“The thing about rugby is that it’s a sport I can relate to with my dad because my dad didn’t grow up playing football and he didn’t grow up in America so it’s the only sport we can fully talk about.”

Anderson said he is looking forward to improving and moving forward with rugby, however, he is sad that his football career is coming to an end.

“I’ve been playing football since fourth grade, I have just always been a football player,” he said.
