After spending his last four years on the Redwood basketball team, three of which were on varsity, Wiggins can say with assurance that he has challenged himself to be the best player he can.
“Getting in good condition was hard,” Wiggins said. “At first, I wasn’t as used to running as much as varsity did, but as I progressed it got easier.”
Wiggins also had to learn that when the basketball season ended, training did not. In order to keep up with the other team members, year-round workouts were required.
At 6’4’’, it is no surprise he has the perfect build for a basketball player.
Wiggins is used to being tough, however. His junior year he pulled a muscle in his back during practice, but decided that in order to help his team he needed to work through it and keep playing for the rest of the season.
Basketball is in Wiggins’ blood. His dad played basketball in high school and his team was second in the state, giving him the opportunity to play with and against a number of NBA stars.
In the past, Wiggins played other sports such as baseball, but he says the strength needed for basketball doesn’t compare.
“You get more into the game. In baseball you sat and wait for the ball—basketball you are up and down the court,” Wiggins said.
Wiggins said that the moment he felt most connected to the game was right before winning NCS.
“It was pretty exciting,” Wiggins said. “We put Redwood on the map for sports. We started a trend so now hopefully other sports will start winning NCS.”
