If defense really does win championships, then it appears that the boys’ varsity basketball team is poised to make a serious run at this year’s MCAL and NCS titles.

The Giants have been tearing through the MCAL, starting off a perfect 6-0 in league play. They have the league’s top ranked defense and second highest ranked offense, and are punishing opponents by an average of 20 points per game.

“We are without a doubt the deepest team in the league,” said senior guard Ryan Healy. “We have a very quick defense, and on offense it is hard for the other team to focus on one player because everyone is a threat. Anyone can go off.”

At 15-2 overall, the varsity team has remained undefeated at home, taking down defending state champs Sacred Heart and also beating Branson for the first time since the Bulls entered the MCAL ten years ago.

“It’s always great to play at home and it’s really easy to get pumped up when there are fans watching,” Healy said. “The fans are stupendous.”

Healy added that the Branson game meant something more to the team, since Redwood has gone 0-19 against them in previous years. The Giants won the game 43-32.

“Branson was a tough game, they were the best team we have played this MCAL season,” he said. “Two of their best players were injured and didn’t play during that game, so they’re definitely still our biggest challengers.”

Even with their depth of talent, senior power forward DeMarqus Wiggins has emerged as a standout player, leading the team in points, rebounds, steals and blocks.  At last week’s home game against Terra Linda, during which Wiggins went for 18 points and led the giants to a 68-42 victory, chants of “MVP” were already raising from the student section.

“DeMarqus has made a big transition since last year, the most noticeable one is his composure on the court,” said senior guard Max Hillman. “He’s always had the raw talent, but he has matured a lot and really become a senior leader. When his head is in the game he’s very hard to stop.”

The team started off the MCAL season with a road victory against Novato, winning 59-33. Since then they have rolled through Branson, Marin Catholic, Terra Linda, Justin Sienna, and Drake, taking home a double-digit victory in each game.

The boys’ varsity basketball team has not won an MCAL championship since 1979. This year’s squad has already taken down Branson and Terra Linda, the second and third ranked teams in MCAL, but will face both again in away games before the playoffs begin.

Tonight at Redwood “Game Night,” the Giants will be hosting a San Marin team made dangerous by 6’7 junior Stuart Wesonga, a player who Redwood coach Steve Compagno described to the Marin IJ as “the best player this league’s maybe ever seen.” Wesonga leads the league in scoring, rebounds, and blocks (21/18/6).

“The key to winning the game is stopping Wesonga.” Hillman said. “We have to limit his touches, box out to prevent offensive rebounds, and just play defense like we’ve been playing.”

The boys’ game is tonight in the main gym at 7:30 pm, following the girls’ game at 6 pm.
