Girls’ varsity golf victory over Branson secures spot in MCAL championship

The girls’ varsity golf team defeated Branson 235-201 on Monday, Oct. 2 at the Meadow Club in Fairfax.

The team was scheduled to play Branson and Marin Catholic (MC), but due to a lack of players, MC did not participate in the match. Sophomore Cambry Weingart explained that MC did not have the minimum number of players in order to play, so they forfeited.

Junior Nina Cinelli scored a total of 44 strokes, followed by Weingart, who trailed closely behind at 51. Senior Katie Levy followed with a score of 52, and sophomore Camille Mungenast scored 54. The win boosted the team’s overall league record to 9-4.

Redwood clinched their victory, with help from Cinelli’s eagle, which is a score two strokes under par, on hole number two. She also hit a birdie on hole number four, which is a score one stroke under par.

Cinelli continued her success, but on the eighth hole, she said that the greens at the Meadow Club were fast, so she wanted to work on her putting for the final two holes.

Cinelli’s goals for the remainder of the season are to be positive and become a more steady player. Consistency, along with team bonding, are also factors that senior Katie Levy believes will help them succeed in MCALs. She says that staying consistent in play relies on technique.

“For me in particular, turning my wrists [is important] because I tend to draw to the right and I need to remember to swing slow because I swing fast,” Levy said.

Levy also stressed that bonding is crucial to improve results, even in the final week of the season. “We are all a really good mix of grades, so we don’t naturally know each other, but we’ve gotten really close this season,” Levy said.

The victory on Monday secured the Giants a spot in the MCAL championships. With the season coming to a close and their final match on Tuesday, Oct. 9 the team talks about their competitors in the next few matches. Junior Sophia Lui said that Terra Linda’s team is their greatest adversary, especially during MCALs. Weingart added saying, “[Terra Linda] have a lot of talent coming in as freshman and they will be good for a long time.”

The girls have their next match on Thursday, Oct. 5.
