“Rainbow” tunnel renamed to honor Robin Williams

Marin’s “Rainbow” Tunnel was officially renamed the “Robin Williams Tunnel” on Feb. 29 after the California State Assembly voted unanimously to change the name this past summer.

Two signs bearing the tunnel’s name were erected on either end of the tunnel. The tunnel, which is located on Highway 101 and serves as a connector between the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin County, is known for its painted rainbow arches.

Williams, who graduated from Redwood in 1969, was found dead in his Tiburon home due to suicide in August 2014.

In order to honor the actor and comedian, the California State Assembly voted 77-0 to rename the tunnel in July 2015. The effort to rename the tunnel was initiated by Belvedere resident Julie Wainwright, who created a change.org petition directed at assemblyman Marc Levine. The petition quickly gathered thousands of signatures.

“Above each of the tunnel entrances are rainbows, which I believe personify Robin in that he was so playful, fun, accessible, alive and colorful,” Wainwright wrote in the petition.
