The girls’ varsity volleyball team trounced Las Lomas High School 3-0 in the North Coast Section Division II semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at home.
Redwood successfully secured a three-set sweep with scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-10.
Captain Bailey Osborn bolstered the team with 11 kills, followed by sophomore starter McKenzie Cooke with seven kills and ten digs. Juniors Marguerite Spaethling and Elly Lundberg added to the team’s defense with two blocks a piece.
“Everyone played really well,” Spaethling said. “As a whole, the personality, the chemistry, the skill, everything was there. It was not a very high error game, so we were able to put it all together and eventually win the game.”
The first two games ended quickly with a downward smash by middle blocker Spaethling to end the first and a kill down the line by outside hitter Osborn to end the second.
In the third and final game, the Giants played cohesively and secured the win with a kill by Spaethling.
“I think we all really want to win NCS despite having lost MCALs,” said defensive specialist Lily Barber. “We have just been really focused and we know there is no bad team, and since we are first that has been a lot of motivation.”
The Giants (31-7) now advance to the North Coast Section finals against Maria Carrillo (28-8) at home at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22.
